Even though most Ocos are small (one to three inches) they are attractive to collectors, along with Las Choyas geodes and Druzy Mist Thunder Eggs, for the secondary mineral formations they contain. The crystals found within these geodes vary in composition but often include minerals such as quartz and rarely amethyst. Oco geodes are arguably the most unique geodes in terms of outside texture, color variety, and internal crystal variety. The outer chalcedony shell is rope-like and when the internal chalcedony layer is exposed, it shows swirling “flame-like” patterns.
Geodes are spherical rocks that contain hollow cavities lined with crystals. The name geode comes from the Greek word Geoides, which means "earthlike." These geodes can be hollow, semi-hollow or may be filled solid with quartz and agate (solid ones are referred to as nodules).
